Vous prendrez bien un peu de chocolat – suisse bien sûr ?

Depuis vingt ans, Conrad Bakker conduit des projets sous le titre générique d’ « Untitled Projects » : qu’il s’agisse de Proust et de ses citations reprises sur téléphones portables, d’une discographie sélective des vinyles préférés de l’artiste (années 1960 et 1970), de tous les livres de la bibliothèque personnelle de Robert Smithson, des diverses éditions des « Choses » de Perec, de la moto de Robert Pirsig dans Traité du zen et de l’entretien des motocyclettes (1974), de la cabane de David Henry Thoreau… toutes ces « choses » sont reproduites, en général à taille réelle, en bois sculpté et peint, entièrement créées par l’artiste lui-même, seul, sans assistant. Réalistes mais jamais hyperréalistes, poétiques et critiques, les objets façonnés par l’artiste nous séduisent, certes, mais en même temps nous interrogent sur nos attentes face aux objets et sur les artifices dont nous entourons nos « choses ».

À la galerie Analix Forever avec laquelle l’artiste travaille depuis plus de quinze ans, Conrad Bakker présente, dès le 3 septembre 2021, « Untitled Project: La Chocolaterie » : un magasin de chocolats suisses en vitrine et une fabrique/atelier de production de « chocolats » à l’arrière, présentant à la fois l’un des produits emblématiques de la Suisse et le labeur nécessaire à sa production. L’atelier/fabrique est en réalité une reconstitution de l’atelier de l’artiste lui-même, duquel émane une production locale, manuelle, lente et respectueuse du produit. Car, au-delà du produit – ici, du chocolat – c’est bien de sa construction économique et sociale que traite l’artiste et plus généralement encore, des mécanismes et des rapports de la société occidentale à l’objet/sujet : une réflexion fondamentale sur l’écologie de la production des biens de consommation.

Would you like some chocolate - Swiss of course?

For over twenty years, Conrad Bakker has been making carved and painted artworks as “Untitled Projects”: whether it be Proust-ian in the form of memes on cellphones, record albums from the 1960s and 1970s, all of the books from Robert Smithson's personal library, paintings of Georges Perec's “Les Choses”, the motorcycle from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974), Henry David Thoreau’s cabin ... all of these “things“ are reproduced, usually life-size, in carved wood, and painted, by the artist. Realistic but never hyperrealistic, poetic and critical, the objects shaped by Conrad Bakker are seductive but simultaneously question the expectations we have of “things” and their artifices.

At Analix Forever gallery with which the artist has now worked for more than fifteen years, Conrad Bakker presents, from September 3rd, 2021, “Untitled Project: La Chocolaterie“, a shop selling Swiss chocolate in the front, and a studio/factory production line in the back, thus representing the selling of one of the emblematic consumer products of Switzerland along with the labor necessary for its production. The studio/factory is a simulation of Bakker's own studio, where the artist, alone, manually, slowly, respectfully, produces his art works, his own “products“ — i.e., our chocolate bars. Beyond the product, this artwork focuses on the economic and social construction of productivity and the labor of our hands, along with the mechanisms and relations of Western society to objects/subjects. Conrad Bakker’s “Untitled Projects” are an ongoing, fundamental reflection on the ecology of the production of consumer goods.
